Cultural Awareness Training

Date: Thursday 24 September

Time: 10.00AM – 2.00PM (4 hours)

Location: Zoom online

Please note attendance at this training is not a substitute for attending Strengthening Cultural Connections Training, VACCA which is the mandatory training for non-Aboriginal foster carers of Aboriginal children

This four-hour Cultural Awareness Training provides participants with an introduction to Aboriginal history and culture in Victoria; an increased understanding of the effects of colonisation, grief and loss on Aboriginal people; and respectful ways of caring for Aboriginal children.

As a result of participation in this activity carers will:

  • Have greater confidence caring for an Aboriginal child
  • Increase their understanding of Aboriginal culture, history, identity
  • Improve their ability to support a child’s cultural connection
  • Gain stronger empathy and understanding of intergenerational impact

This training will be presented by VACCA, the Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency. VACCA trainers are proud Aboriginal staff members with their own lived experience and Cultural knowledge. They currently deliver Strengthening Cultural Connection training through Carer Kafe as well as offer a range of Carer Connection Days and other events for carers.

The session is designed for kinship, foster and permanent carers.

Learning and Development Sessions

Carer Kafe offers free online and in person sessions for Victorian kinship, permanent and accredited foster carers.
