Learning and Development Retreat for All Carers – 10 and 11 October 2026 – Albert Park
Fri 16 Oct
What a wonderful weekend of learning, connection and renewal!
On 10–11 October, 42 Kinship carers came together for Carer Kafe’s Learning and Development Retreat for Kinship Carers at Pullman & Mercure Melbourne Albert Park. Across two inspiring days, participants explored trauma-informed practice, sustainable caring, mindfulness, wellbeing and art therapy.
The retreat marked the end of Kinship Care Week and offered a welcoming space for carers to share experiences, build meaningful connections and build their carer skillset. Feedback reflected a strong sense of belonging, renewed confidence and the powerful reminder that no carer is alone on their journey.
Our morning was opened by local elder Uncle Mark Brown, who shared a beautiful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, acknowledging the traditional lands of the Bunurong People.
Carers then explored a day of learning with Marina Dickson’s ‘Connecting to Care and Carers Wellbeing’ session. The workshop focused on strengthening carer connections, exploring key trauma-informed concepts such as neurobiology and the impacts of trauma; and how understanding and connection can support wellbeing. The day concluded with connection opportunities over dinner.
Sunday began with beautiful sunshine and a mindfulness session with Laura Grace from Calm Foundations, followed by a Creative Arts Therapy workshop facilitated by Fiona McGrath AThR (Water Ribbons Art Therapy) and Sara Grace AThR (Arts Therapy Studio).
We extend our heartfelt thanks to every kinship carer who contributed so openly and generously. Your stories, insights and encouragement made the weekend truly special.
Some reflections from Carers who attended this retreat:
- “Resting and taking time for oneself. This retreat enabled me to focus on my own needs whilst learning about our child’s needs. Talking to other carers who understand what you are going through. Not offering empty platitudes but genuine understanding.”
- “My bucket is full. I love talking to other carers and to listen to their stories. It makes me feel included and like I belong.”
- “It just reminds me of why I am doing this.”
- “Lots of new connections, making new friends, coming away refreshed with a clear mind to start my caring role again.”
- “I feel supported, cared for and rested, but most of all I felt heard.”
- “The opportunity to connect with other carers and have a break is so important and I didn’t realise how exhausted I was and It’s been a huge help for my mental health.”
- “I love this safe space to unwind with other people that face the same daily challenges, ups and downs the average people do not understand.”
- “What a wonderful weekend. I met so many carers, we shared stories, we encouraged each other and acknowledged our unique journeys of caring for young people. Thank you.”
We look forward to creating more opportunities for carers to learn, connect and feel supported.
