Caring for Young People who Self-Harm
In this 2-hour workshop, Garry King will address the topic of “Self-Harm – Non-Suicidal Self-Injury”.
Garry will explore what self-harm is, why it happens, and what you as a carer can do.
The workshop will include:
- who is most at risk
- specific strategies to reduce and prevent self-harm
- protective factors
- risk factors
- what to say, what to do, who to link with and when
- what to look for / signs of self-harm
Garry King has extensive experience working with young people, as a teacher, youth worker and counsellor. This experience is complimented by degrees in welfare, education, counselling and suicidology. His most recent book, authored with Mary Margaret Kerr, is “School Crisis Prevention & Intervention.”
Garry has presented on this topic at the 2018 World Positive Psychology Conference and the International Society for the Study of Self Injury world conference.
Children and young people should not be present during this presentation nor have access to the notes.
The session is designed for kinship, foster and permanent carers.
