Emotional Intelligence and the importance of emotion coaching kids in care – Part 1

This session, presented by Joanie Bartolo from Emotion Wise, explores emotional intelligence and offers support for carers by providing a brief introduction of kids in care, trauma and the key principles from Tuning in to Kids®, a parenting program that aims to provide helpful ways of responding to young people’s emotions, and help children learn important skills of emotional intelligence. The presentation has been tailored to the Out of Home Care community (inclusive of all carers) and focuses on the emotional connection between carers and children.

It is useful for carers of children and young people of all ages and offers:

  • A brief introduction to the key principles from Tuning in to Kids® and Tuning in to Teens®
  • A focus on the emotional connection between carers and children
  • Skills in emotion coaching including recognising, understanding and responding to children’s emotions in an accepting, supportive way

Joanie Bartolo is the Principal Consultant at Emotion Wise. She is a qualified social worker and an accredited Tuning in to Kids® and Tuning in to Teens® practitioner. Joanie has worked with children and families for 25 years and has been a consultant for over 10 years. She has a particular passion for working with children who have experienced trauma and believes in fostering the relationship between children and their families.
