Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Youth Mental Health First Aid

Date: Friday 6th and Saturday 7th March 2026 Morning tea and lunch provided both days

Time: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Carers need to attend both days to complete the course.

Location: VACCA Preston (Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency), 340 Bell Street, Preston VIC 3072

Presented by: Baydon Widdicombe

Allocate time for travel and finding a car park. Darebin Arts Centre is a 5min walk from the office on Bell Street and offers free all-day parking.

The Youth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young person (aged 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional support is received or the crisis resolves.

A certificate of participation will be issued, or carers who successfully complete the course can choose to undertake the 3-year Accreditation process, that involves a short online multiple-choice activity. This will be discussed in more detail at the workshop.

Course facilitator Baydon Widdicombe is a proud Dharug Man living on Dja Dja Wurrung Country in Central Victoria. Baydon is passionate about reducing Mental Health stigma and building the capacity of community to lead their own suicide prevention program. Baydon has worked within the local community and has a passion for educating others through sharing knowledge and opening up discussions.

The session is designed for kinship, foster and permanent carers.

The course content and discussions may cause some distress and discomfort, and significant trigger warnings will be in place within the course.
